Biography

Ohund Shermuhammad Akmal Khoqandiy was one of the leading figures of the Kokand literary circle, active in the first half of the 18th and the opening years of the 19th century. He was known as a poet, a madrasa teacher (mudarris), a chronicler and a skilled calligrapher, and was the father of the celebrated Uzbek poet Mahmur. Shermuhammad Akmal was born in the village of Boytuman in the Fergana Valley. He set great store by learning and enlightenment, taught at the Mir madrasa in Kokand, and was recognised as one of the learned and respected scholars of his day. He died in Kokand in about 1810. Akmal Khoqandiy wrote in both Uzbek and Tajik. His verse exalts love, goodness, learning, good conduct and justice, while censuring ignorance and injustice. Although his divan has not come down to us in full, individual ghazals and mukhammases survive in bayoz anthologies. Shermuhammad Akmal is also known as a historian: he wrote “Amirnoma”, regarded as one of the important sources for the history of the Kokand Khanate. Some sources also credit him with “Nasabnoma-yi tarikh-i khavoqin-i Farghona”.
