Mirzo Sharif Dabir

Biography

Mirzo Sharif Dabir was a celebrated calligrapher and poet who lived and worked in Kokand in the first half of the 19th century. One of the outstanding figures of the Kokand school of calligraphy, he copied many manuscripts in a refined nasta'liq hand. Alongside calligraphy he also wrote poetry. In 1836, at the commission of Muhammad Alikhan, he copied Fuzuli's divan in a very beautiful nasta'liq, and in 1837 he copied a selection of Fuzuli's ghazals as well. He also transcribed the ghazals of Alisher Navoiy with great skill. Mirzo Sharif Dabir is recognised as one of the masters of the Kokand school of book-making and calligraphy.
