Biography

Ibn Fazliy — recorded in the sources under the full name Muhammad Sharif Fazliy, with Fazliy as his pen name — was born in the city of Kokand and lived and wrote in the late 18th and early 19th century as one of the well-known figures of the Kokand literary circle. He is counted among the major poets of the Kokand khanate. He wrote chiefly in Uzbek (Turkic), and a number of his pieces are also found in Persian-Tajik. He belonged both to the khanate's court and to the literary life of the city. Love, ethics and good conduct, humanity, the truths of life, the events of his day and Sufi ideas all occupy a large place in his work. He wrote prolifically in the classical forms of the ghazal, muhammas, musaddas and qasida, and his poems have reached us through divans and bayaz anthologies compiled later. Ibn Fazliy made a worthy contribution to the growth of the Kokand literary circle and was a contemporary of Uvaysiy, Nodira, Mahmur and Gulxaniy.
