Kasrat Xo'qandiy (Munshiy)

Biography

Kasrat — who appears in the sources also as Kasrat Xo'qandiy or as the Munshiy — was a poet and master of the written word (munshiy) who lived and worked in the Kokand khanate in the 19th century. He took an active part in the literary and chancery life of his day. Kasrat was not only a poet but served as a munshiy at the court or in the khanate's chancery, skilled at setting down state documents, official letters and literary texts in a fine hand and in the elevated insha style. He belongs among the representatives of the Kokand literary school of the time of Amir Umarkhan and the khans who followed him. He wrote chiefly ghazals and qasidas, together with verse pieces in the epistolary manner proper to a munshiy. Alongside the traditional themes of love and philosophy, his poems also reflect the social scenes of his age.
