Biography

Mujrim Obid — his given name was Mirzo Obid (c. 1748–1810) — was a celebrated Uzbek Sufi and lyric poet of the Kokand literary circle in the second half of the 18th and the early 19th century. He was born and raised in the city of Kokand, worked as a craftsman, and acquired a deep grounding in Sufism and in letters. A substantial divan of his has survived; he wrote chiefly in the ghazal, muhammas and musaddas forms. The transience of the world, spiritual purification and the striving towards the Truth are the governing themes of his poetry. At the same time Mujrim Obid depicted the injustices of his age, the divisions of rank and the ills of society openly and from life, exalting human dignity, sincerity and moral purity. His verse is marked by a popular simplicity, a strong musicality and a directness of feeling — many of his ghazals are still sung today in the classical song repertoire and in the maqom modes.
