Biography

Najib is mentioned in the tazkiras as one of the classical poets of the Kokand literary circle, living in the late 18th and early 19th century. Very little about his life and work has survived. His name appears chiefly in tazkira sources such as Fazliy Namangoniy's 'Majmuai shoiron', where he is listed among the poets who took part in the literary gatherings of Umarkhan's reign. No reliable historical record survives of his dates, his birthplace or the course of his life. Najib wrote in the ghazal and in other traditional forms of classical poetry; love, moral virtue, human perfection and Sufi thought are the principal themes of his verse. No separate divan of his has yet been found — his name and a handful of poems are known only from the tazkiras. He is one of the least studied poets of the Kokand circle: the available sources give no more than brief notices of him, and the greater part of his literary legacy has not come down to us.
