Qodirqul Shoir Munshiy

Biography

Qodirqul Shoir Munshiy was a poet, calligrapher and munshiy active in the literary and cultural life of Kokand and the Fergana Valley in the second half of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. A complete master of calligraphy and of the insha style, he served as a munshiy — a secretary — at court and in official offices, copying and drafting official and private letters, documents and literary works in a fine hand. As a poet Qodirqul wrote ghazals, muhammas and ruba'is in the traditions of classical Uzbek and Persian-Tajik poetry. Alongside the traditional themes of love and Sufism, his verse also reflects the social and educational outlook of his time. His own works and the manuscripts he copied survive in the literary anthologies (bayaz) of the Fergana Valley of the late 19th and early 20th century, in tazkiras, and in the collections of figures of the Kokand literary circle.
