Turobiy

Biography

Turobiy was a poet who lived under that pen name in the first half of the 19th century and was active in the reigns of Amir Umarxon (Amiriy) and Muhammad Alixon. The pen name Turobiy comes from the Arabic turab — dust, earth, humility — and stands for Sufi self-abasement. He wrote lyric ghazals, muhammas and ruba'is chiefly in Uzbek and Persian; the experience of love and gnostic, philosophical reflection lead in his verse. Although no finished divan of his own has come down to us, many of his works were taken into the Fergana and Kokand literary bayaz anthologies compiled in the second half of the 19th century, and are kept in the manuscript fonds of the Institute of Oriental Studies.
