Biography

Azimkhoja Eshon Azimiy (pen name Azimiy) was a major Sufi poet, sheikh and enlightener who wrote in the first half of the 19th century within the Kokand literary milieu. His legacy holds an important place in Uzbek classical literature, particularly Sufi poetry. Azimkhoja Eshon mastered the religious and secular sciences at the madrasas of Bukhara; he was not only a poet but also held the offices of imam and murshid (spiritual guide of a Sufi order). Under the pen name “Azimiy” he composed ghazals and hikmats (wisdom verses). One of his major works is “Hikmati Azimkhoja” (in short “Hikmat”), which continues the tradition of Khoja Ahmad Yasawi. Manuscript copies of his divan “Murod ul-oshiqin”, devoted to themes of love and the divine, also survive. According to historical sources, the poet died in AH 1263 (1846–1847 CE) in the city of Kokand.

Translation

Не спрашивает возлюбленная о моём состоянии — знать, нашлась у неё причина; или же собственная моя злосчастность обернулась бедой на мою голову. В скитаниях ища о ней вестей, не утихло безумное сердце моё — знать, стало оно неприкаянным. Сколько уж лет желаю — и не обрёл свидания с ней; знать, смерть моя в разлуке стала велением судьбы. Как только челом и душою припал я к порогу возлюбленной, успокоилось сердце моё, о Азим, — знать, снизошло от неё довольство.

So'rmas holim yorima bir muddao bo'ldi magar, Yo o'zumni shumlig'im boshga balo bo'ldi magar. Aylabon yorni so'rog'im darbadarlikda yurub, Tinmadi devona ko'nglum benavo bo'ldi magar. Necha yillardurki istab topmadim yor vaslini, Hajrida o'lmakligim hukmi qazo bo'ldi magar. Jabhani jon birla qo'yg'ach yorni dargohiga, Tindi ko'nglum, ey Azim, sandin rizo bo'ldi magar.
