Biography

Mirzo Muhammad Ayyub Bahjat was a poet and court librarian who wrote in the Kokand literary circle in the first half of the 19th century. His given name was Mirzo Muhammad Ayyub and his pen name Bahjat. He was the son of the well-known historian and poet Mirzo Qalandar Mushrif. He made his name as a young poet already in Umarkhan's day, and later, under Muhammad Alikhan, held the post of kitobdor — keeper of the palace library of the Kokand khanate. He wrote in both Uzbek and Persian (zullisonayn). The sources record that he compiled a divan, but it has never been found. The tazkira 'Majmuai shoiron' describes him thus: Mushrif's son Bahjat is a man of learning and good breeding; he is a sapling of talent who, on coming to maturity, will be a sage like Plato. Unfortunately almost none of Bahjat's own poetry survives — what has reached us is chiefly the notice of him preserved in the tazkiras.

Yake ibni Mushrif ki, u Behjat ast, Zi ilmu adab qobili suhbat ast. Niholi barumandi bog'i xayol, Falotun shavad gar rasad ba kamol.
