Fazliy Namangoniy (Abdulkarim)

Biography

Fazliy Namangoniy — pen name Fazliy, real name Abdulkarim (second half of the 18th to first half of the 19th century, Namangan) — was a poet and literary scholar. In the early 19th century he held various offices in To'raqo'rg'on and Namangan. During the reign of Umarkhan (1810–1822) he came to Kokand; his poetic gift won him the khan's favour and he was soon named head of the court poets — “Malik ush-shuaro”. He described Umarkhan's life, deeds, military campaigns and the events of his reign in the narrative poem “Umarnoma”. At the khan's commission Fazliy compiled the tazkira “Majmua-i shoiron” (“Anthology of Poets”, 1821). This work — the first tazkira in the history of Uzbek literary scholarship to be composed in verse — holds valuable information on more than a hundred figures of the Kokand literary milieu of the early 19th century, together with specimens of their work; it also includes Fazliy's own qasidas and ghazals and his poetic exchange with the poetess Mahzuna. Fazliy is known to have compiled a “Divan” as well, but it has not been found. His ghazals, masnavis, mukhammases, ruba'is and tuyuqs, written in Uzbek and Tajik, are scattered through various anthologies and bayozes. “Majmua-i shoiron” circulated widely in manuscript and lithographed copies in the 19th and early 20th centuries and won great renown among men of letters; its most complete manuscripts are kept at the Abu Rayhon Beruniy Institute of Oriental Studies. After Umarkhan's death in 1822 Fazliy left for Namangan, where he died.
