Biography

Muhammad Yusuf Fikrot was a gifted poet, calligrapher and enlightened man of letters who lived and wrote in Kokand in the late 19th and early 20th century. One of the active figures of the Kokand literary circle, he had a complete command of classical poetry and of the art of calligraphy, writing with particular mastery in the nasta'liq and naskh hands. Fikrot wrote ghazals, musaddas and ruba'is. Alongside the classical themes of love, his work is led by the ideals of enlightenment, complaint at the injustice of the age and praise of human virtue. As a calligrapher he had a part in copying a number of rare Kokand manuscripts.

Сердце ищет кумира — возлюбленную, наперсницу души, ищет мгновения, когда достигнет свидания с ней. В печали любви сгорело тело — увы, таков исход; у искусного лекаря оно ищет облегчения боли. В цветнике повсюду распустились розы и базилик, а этот Фикрат ищет цветник той смеющейся розы.

Ko'ngul mahrami dilbar sanamni izlaydur, Visoli vasliga yetmak damini izlaydur. G'ami muhabbatida kuydi tan bu oqibat essiz, Tabibi hoziq ila dardi kamni izlaydur. Chaman ichinda ochilmish gul-u rayhon har yon, Bu Fikrot ul guli xandon chamanin izlaydur.
