G'oziy

Biography

G'oziy was born in Kokand in the middle of the 18th century. From his youth he wrote under the pen name “G'oziy” in both Uzbek and Tajik, and studied in the madrasas of Bukhara. He taught as a mudarris at the Madrasa-i Mir in Kokand and served as the city's mufti. He was a close friend of Akmal Khoqandiy and looked to Fuzuli as his master. G'oziy died in Kokand in 1818. In the substance of his verse, in his attitude to the world around him and in his handling of poetic figures alike he followed Fuzuli's path and manner, composing mukhammases upon his ghazals. He wrote chiefly lyric ghazals and chronogram poems, and compiled a divan. His lyrics sing of the movements of the human heart, of longings and desires, joys and sorrows, and exalt true human love, beauty and fidelity, humanity and justice. G'oziy's poems help to show a truthful picture of social life in the second half of the 18th and the early 19th century and to illuminate more fully the various currents of the literary life of his time. In his civic lyrics he complains of the injustice and lawlessness that prevailed in that age and of his own unhappy lot — among them “My frame is bent...” and “I am distracted...”. His didactic works insist on holding human virtue high, on living modestly, on never trampling another person's worth and on guarding one's own dignity.
