Biography

Junaydulloh Islomshayx o'g'li Hoziq was a poet and scholar who lived and wrote in the late 18th and the first half of the 19th century, a major figure of both Uzbek and Tajik literature. Hoziq was born in Bukhara; his father Islomshayx was one of the learned men of his day. At the court of the Bukharan emir Amir Haydar he won great esteem and became one of the leading poets and calligraphers of the khanate. His outspokenness and the intrigues of the court, however, soured his relations with the emir, and he was forced to leave Bukhara for Kokand, first for the court of Umarxon and later that of Muhammad Alixon (Madalixon). In the Kokand literary circle he became known for his high artistry and took an active part in literary gatherings. He later fell victim to the political rivalry between Bukhara and Kokand and to court intrigue, and was executed on the orders of the Bukharan emir Nasrulloh. He wrote under the pen name Hoziq (in his early years sometimes Voqif) and compiled divans in Uzbek and Tajik. His narrative poem Yusuf va Zulayho and his philosophical and moral works are counted among the finest examples of classical Uzbek and Tajik literature. Hoziq worthily carried on the traditions of Navoiy, Bedil and Fuzuliy, handling complex radifs and poetic figures with mastery.
