Huvaydo (Khojanazar Ghoibnazar o'g'li)
Biography
Huvaydo (pen name; real name Khojanazar Ghoibnazar o'g'li; born in Osh, year unknown — died 1780/81 in the village of Chimyon, Fergana Province) was a poet and a major figure of Sufi poetry. He studied at the madrasas of Kokand. He opened a school in his village and taught there for many years, also working as a craftsman. After his death his poems were gathered into a divan by his grandchildren, comprising 351 ghazals, 28 ruba'is, 41 quatrains, 3 mukhammas, 1 musaddas, 1 musamman, 1 mustazad, 3 masnavis, and the moral-didactic poem “Rohati dil” (Delight of the Heart). Several manuscript copies and lithographic editions of the “Divan of Huvaydo” survive; a copy transcribed by his great-grandson Salohiddin Soqib (1838–1910) and Mirza Hakim ibn Mirza Umid of Margilan is kept in the library of Samarkand State University (inv. No. 3903). His grandson Sirojiy and great-grandchildren Samarbonu (1837–1891), Salohiddin Soqib and G'aribiy were likewise poets who compiled divans and continued his tradition.
