Imomali Qori Qunduziy
Biography
Imomali Qori Qunduziy — his given name was Imomali Sulton Muhammad — was a celebrated 19th-century poet and historian and one of the leading figures of the Kokand literary circle. He was born in 1786 in Kunduz (Afghanistan) and died in 1857 in Kokand. He was blind from birth. He studied in Bukhara and became known as “Qori” because he had memorised the whole Qur'an; he had a thorough command of Arabic and of the sciences of fiqh, hadith and literature. During the reign of Amir Umarkhan he came to Kokand and became one of the accomplished members of the court literary circle. He wrote in Uzbek and Persian, also using the pen names “Mahfiy” and “Komiy”. His best-known work is “Tavorix-i manzuma”, which recounts the important events and figures of the history of the Kokand Khanate in verse chronograms.
