Biography

Mulla Niyoz Muhammad Xo'qandiy, who wrote under the pen name Koshifiy, was a well-known figure of the 19th-century Kokand literary circle — both a poet and a historian. He lived in Kokand in the 19th century and, thanks to his sharp mind and fine handwriting, served at the court of the Kokand Khanate as a scribe and munshi. The work that made his name is “Tarikh-i Shahrukhi” (1871), a detailed account of the origins of the Kokand khans, of the Fergana Valley, and of the social and political history of the khanate. Koshifiy wrote in the traditions of classical literature, following such great masters as Navoiy and Fuzuli. Love and fidelity, divine love, and moral-philosophical reflection are the leading themes of his poetry.

Если поведаю о доле своей той, чей стан — кипарис, пламенный вздох мой достигнет самой глубины моей. Боль любви обратила нутро моё в кровь, о пери-ликая, — не диво, если ты со состраданием взглянешь на моё бессонное состояние. Кошифий, потерпи: пусть этот вращающийся небосвод минует, — встреча с любимой в конце концов приведёт тебя к желанному.

Gar desam holimni ul qaddi sarv ro'yimga, Ohi so'zonim yetar to chohiy chaqimga. Ishq dardi ayladi bag'rimni dilxun, ey pariro'y, Ne ajab, rahming kelib boqsang bu bedor holimga. Koshifiyo, sabr qil, bu charxi davvor o'tsa gar, Vasli yor oqibat yetkurur maqsudingga.
