Qozi Ernazar Maknun Zokiy

Biography

Qozi Ernazar Maknun Zokiy was a member of the Kokand literary circle. He served for a long time as a qozi (judge), and for that reason wrote under the name “Qozi”; he is mentioned among the poets belonging to the Kokand milieu. Very little biographical information about him has survived, but he is held to have been one of the representatives of the literary circle that took shape in the Fergana Valley in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In this period many gifted poets were at work in Kokand, continuing the traditions of classical verse. Maknun Zokiy too is remembered among those who followed the ghazal traditions proper to classical literature. His poems reflect love, the inner spiritual world of the human being, ethics, fidelity and devotion. As with the other Kokand poets of the time, Sufi views and ideas of human perfection also held an important place in his work.
