Mug'anniy (G'anijon Xolmatov)

Biography

Mug'anniy — his given name was G'anijon Xolmatov — was a notable poet, actor and stage director, known in modern Uzbek poetry for his lyric and aruz ghazals and for verse written to be sung. He is counted among the major figures of the literary life of the Fergana Valley — of the city of Osh — which stands close to that of Kokand. He was born in Osh on 5 February 1949. After graduating from the Tashkent Institute of Theatre and Fine Arts he worked for many years as a director and an actor. His books 'Suyanganim tor bo'ldi', 'Yuz pora dil', 'Sen ketding asta-asta' and 'Qazo darslari' were published, along with hundreds of ghazals in the aruz metres. Many of his lyric and love poems were set to music and sung by such well-known modern and classical singers as Sherali Jo'rayev, Muhriddin Xoliqov and Oxunjon Madaliyev. He died in 2014.
