Mutrib Xo'qandiy

Biography

Mutrib Xo'qandiy (19th century) was one of the brightest figures of the literary circle that took shape in the Kokand Khanate under Muhammad Umarxon (Amiriy). He was known by the pen name Mutrib, 'musician', 'singer', because he was not only a passionate poet but also a singer and musician with an enchanting voice. He grew up in the cultural world of Kokand and its surroundings and was drawn to music and classical poetry from his youth. He took an active part in the literary and musical gatherings held by Umarxon and Nodirabegim. In his tazkira Majmuai shoiron, Fazliy Namangoniy singled out Mutrib's mastery both as a poet and as a singer and praised his ghazals highly. Mutrib usually set his poems to maqom melodies and lively tunes, writing in the most musical metres of the aruz. The core of his work is secular, heartfelt love ghazals: he sang with great skill of the beauty of union with the beloved, the torment of separation and the lover's fidelity. Musical terms — parda, navo, soz, ud, chang, tor, dilkash — appear often in his verse, as the poet sought to convey in words the freshness of melody and song. Alongside earthly love, his ghazals also reflect divine love, purity of heart and wise thoughts on the transience of life. Mutrib's ghazals, muhammas and fards have come down to us in various bayaz anthologies and compilations of the 19th century; they are kept in the Kokand Museum of Literature and in the manuscript fonds of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan.
