Biography

Podshokhkhoja Yusuf Alikhoja o'g'li Ramziy was a member of the Kokand literary circle who lived and wrote in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and is counted among the classical Uzbek poets. In literature he is known by the pen name “Ramziy”. He had a good command of Arabic and Persian and composed ghazals, mukhammas, qit'a and other poetic forms within the traditions of classical literature. Love, fidelity, devotion, moral purity, humaneness, the transience of life and Sufi ideas serve as the principal themes of his verse. Ramziy used poetic figures with great skill while writing in a plain and fluent style. He is recognised as one of the authors who carried on the classical poetic traditions of the Kokand milieu. A number of his poems survive in various tazkiras and bayaz anthologies and count as important sources for the study of the Kokand literary circle. Little is known of Ramziy's life, so no precise dates of birth or death have been preserved. He is, however, listed among the poets who lived and wrote in the final phase of the Khanate of Kokand.
