Khojakalon Rind (Rindiy)

Biography

Khojakalon Rind, known in poetry by the pen name Rindiy, was one of the classical Uzbek poets of the 19th century belonging to the literary circle of Kokand. He lived in the same era as such celebrated figures as Amiriy, Ado, Fazliy and G'ulxaniy, and was known as one of the representatives of that circle. Very little information about Rindiy's life and work has survived, so the years of his birth and death are not precisely known. The tazkiras and literary-historical sources, however, record that he lived and wrote during the period of the Khanate of Kokand. In his ghazals the poet gave accomplished artistic expression to love, fidelity, humaneness, the transience of life, moral virtue and Sufi ideas. His verse was composed within the traditions of classical Uzbek literature and stands out for the fluency of its language, its wealth of poetic devices and the depth of its content. Rindiy's name is mentioned in Sadriddin Ayniy's tazkira “Namuna-i adabiyot-i tojik” among the poets of the Kokand literary milieu — evidence that he was one of the recognised and well-known authors of his day.
