Vahshiy

Biography

Vahshiy was one of the gifted figures of the Kokand literary circle of the late 18th and early 19th century, a poet known for his ardent ghazals and his deep lyric voice. He was born and raised in the city of Kokand in the Fergana Valley and took an active part in the literary life and the poetic contests of the Khanate of Kokand. His choice of the pen name Vahshiy — 'the wild one', 'the solitary' — came from the cast of his own poetry: passionate, impetuous, and fond of singing apart from the crowd, in seclusion. The poet wrote ghazals, muhammas and ruba'is chiefly in Uzbek and in Persian-Tajik. The traditions of Navoiy, Fuzuliy and Bedil are markedly reflected in his work. Fidelity, devotion, the pain of separation, the complaint against fate, and the feelings of divine and earthly love hold the leading place in his verse.
