Abdunabi Xotif

Biography

Abdunabi Xotif — pen name Xotif, real name Abdunabi — was one of the leading figures of the Kokand literary circle, active from the end of the 18th century into the first half of the 19th. He came from the villages around Kokand and studied in the city's madrasas. He served at first as a village imam and later, on the strength of his learning, took a place in the literary circle at the court of the Kokand Khanate. He was well versed in kalam, logic, fiqh and hikmat; some sources record that he also acted as a mufti and a qozi. He wrote chiefly ghazals, qasidas, mukhammases and ruba'is. Fazliy Namangoniy's tazkira “Majmuat ush-shuaro” gives specimens of his verse together with notes on his work. Love, human virtue, enlightenment and the philosophy of life are the principal themes of his poetry. Abdunabi Xotif wrote a narrative poem devoted to the life of Nodirabegim (Mohlaroyim) and to her part in the government of the state. Although the work was left unfinished, it is counted among the important historical sources illuminating Nodira's services to learning, literature and building.
