Zarif

Biography

Zarif was one of the classical Uzbek poets who lived and wrote within the literary circle of 19th-century Kokand. He was regarded as one of the learned and gifted authors of his time. Love, fidelity, devotion, the spiritual perfection of the human being, the transience of life and Sufi ideas occupy an important place in Zarif's work. The poet wrote mainly in the ghazal, the mukhammas and other traditional poetic forms. His poetry reflects the high artistic traditions of classical Uzbek literature; his works stand out for their simple, fluent language, refined imagery and moving expression. As one of the active members of the Kokand literary milieu he made a worthy contribution to the development of classical Uzbek poetry. Zarif's literary legacy holds an important place in the history of the national literature and counts among the valuable sources for the study of classical poetic tradition.
