Sultonkhon To'ra Ado

Biography

Sultonkhon To'ra Ado was a native of Samarkand and a descendant of Khoja Ahror. The author of “Tuhfat al-ahbab” devoted several pages at the opening of his book to a description of this very man, and “Namuna-i adabiyot-i tojik” presents him in the same way. Although he left a number of polished poems in Uzbek, the bulk of his work was composed in another language, so he cannot be counted among the Uzbek poets proper. Because Ado lived in Kokand for several years and came into his full flowering there, he is listed among the guest poets of the Kokand literary circle. His verse is dominated by the themes of classical lyric poetry: the torment of love, the loss of patience and repose, and the fire of separation.
