Biography

Oxund Oqil Muhammad o'g'li Hijrat (late 18th to first half of the 19th century) was one of the accomplished figures of the Kokand literary circle, a poet and madrasa teacher. Hijrat was a deeply learned and cultivated religious scholar of his time. For his teaching and his complete command of Islamic law and the sciences of the sharia he was honoured with the title of oxund. In the days of the Kokand Khanate he took an active part in the circle of writers gathered around Amir Umarxon (Amiriy) and Nodirabegim. His work was highly praised in Fazliy Namangoniy's tazkira Majmuat ush-shuaro ('Collection of Poets'). He wrote chiefly ghazals, muhammas and ruba'is; continuing the tradition of the classical poets, he took up themes of love and philosophy, of mystical knowledge and of morals. The torments of the lover, the faithlessness of the world and spiritual perfection are expressed in fine lines in Hijrat's verse.
