Biography

Muzmar — who also appears in the sources under the pen name Muzmar Xo'qandiy — was a poet of the Kokand literary circle in the first half and middle of the 19th century, and one of the representatives of classical Uzbek literature. He is counted among the prolific Kokand school of poetry of the time of Amir Umarkhan (Amiriy) and his successors. He worked mainly in the traditional classical forms of the ghazal, the muhammas and the ruba'i. Lyrical feeling, Sufi and philosophical reflection, and the amatory themes characteristic of Eastern poetry predominate in his work. Muzmar's writings survive in the tazkiras compiled in the Fergana Valley in the 19th century — among them Fazliy Namangoniy's collection 'Majmuat ush-shuaro' — and in various bayaz anthologies and manuscript compilations.
