Muhammad Sharif Uzlat

Biography

Muhammad Sharif was a celebrated bilingual (zullisonayn) poet and calligrapher who wrote under the pen names Uzlat, Mahjur, Nodir (Nodiriy) and Sharif (Sharifiy). He was born between 1752 and 1758 in the village of Koson, in the Chust (Kosonsoy) district of what is now Namangan Region; some sources give 1743, but most researchers regard 1752–1758 as the likely date. He wrote in Uzbek and Tajik. He came to Kokand in the last years of Umarkhan's reign and later served as court calligrapher under the patronage of Nodira. He left a poetic legacy of more than 13,000 lines. His best-known work is the narrative poem “Haft gulshan” (“Seven Rose Gardens”, 1824–1825), and his divan has also survived.

Когда бы в дервишеской нищете таилась жажда власти, разве нищий не надел бы рубище и не возложил свою чашу венцом на голову? Жемчуг моих сердоликовых слёз — кровь сердца, вот весь урожай моей любви; но за эту драгоценность страж-шихна не взимает пошлины с торговца безумием.

Agar bo'lsaydi faqr ichra havoyi saltanat, nechun Gado kachkulini vojun kiyib, bosh uzra toj etmaz. Duri ashki aqiqiy xuni dildur hosili ishqim, Bu javharni junun savdogaridin shahna boj etmaz.
